Most floors can be accented with an area rug. Rugs can have a tremendous impact on the décor of a room, by providing a focal point, or by creating continuity of design by coordinating disparate pieces and color choices. They can be a relatively inexpensive way of reviving one’s decorating with very little effort.

Consider any practical purposes of the rug you are getting before purchase. This will help you narrow down your choices in terms of type of fiber, stain resistance, and budget. If the rug is intended, for example, to protect a hardwood floor in a particularly high traffic area, you know you need one that is easily cleaned or repaired, and you should budget less for a rug that may have to be replaced. On the other hand, a rug for a spare bedroom intended simply to coordinate with the curtains and furnishings may not receive much wear-and-tear, and a more luxurious choice is possible.

While the pattern of the rug you choose may not necessarily need to match the patterns of the upholstery already present, it should repeat at least one or two of the dominant colors in the room. Take a swatch of cloth, or a paint chip that represents the color you wish to coordinate with, and look for a rug that includes that color within its design
